For the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, serving hope is just as critical as serving food.
We know that you feel the same way.
With your support, we can provide hope to the students in our Food Service Training Academy by teaching them the professional food service skills that can help them take a positive step towards the future.
Asmar Webb, a recent Academy graduate, walked away at the end of our 14-week course with a new job, a bright future and a changed perspective on life: |
| |
“The Academy gave me an opportunity—all they asked was that I take it. At first, I fought against it; but my teachers never gave up on me. They taught me patience, understanding and the value of teamwork. Thanks to them, I’m moving on to great things and helping others along the way.” |
|
When other doors have been closed, students find a place in which they can succeed at the Food Service Training Academy.
The Community FoodBank of New Jersey subsidizes this program, at no cost to the student, because we believe everyone deserves a chance. Click here to help us serve hope and change lives. |

Host a House Party!
September is Hunger Action Month and we’re filling the calendar with events that will raise awareness about the issue of hunger in our communities. You can help by opening your home to a group of your friends and neighbors one evening. Refreshments, prepared by our Food Service Training Academy students, will be provided, as will a staff member from the Community FoodBank of New Jersey to lead a discussion on what we are doing to combat hunger and poverty and answer questions on how others can help us in this fight. If you have a date on your calendar in September that you would like to fill, contact Natalie Ottaiano, 908-355-3663, ext. 252. |
Raise Your Voice Against Hunger
Join friends of the FoodBank to commemorate Hunger Action Month in song. On Thursday, September 23 from 6 pm to 8 pm, “Souls of Integrity” and other local choirs will be raising their voices against hunger. While listening, you and your family can do your part by participating in hands-on activities that will help get food to those in need. For more information, contact Larry Imboden at 908-355-3663, ext. 245 or at limboden@njfoodbank.org. |

| Did You Know... |
- Other than a very modest decline last year, the proportion of people living in poverty has steadily been on the rise since 2000. Today, almost 37 million people live in poverty in the United States.
- The number of people in the U.S. without health insurance has grown to 47 million, the highest level on record. This includes more than 1 in 6 full-time workers and almost 9 million children.
- When it comes to the subset of working poor families, NJ again ranked 48th. Only 38% of eligible working poor people received food stamp benefits, compared to 51% nationally.
- The government defines poverty as an annual income of only $16,227 for a family of three.
